Anti-Semitic Representative Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) is set to introduce legislation challenging the Biden administration’s proposed multimillion-dollar package of bomb equipment for Israel. The move, reported by a source to HuffPost, marks the initial congressional opposition to the United States’ longstanding policy of continuous and expanding military support for Israel, particularly amidst its lethal campaign in Gaza.
The terror-supporting Omar plans to file a “resolution of disapproval” by Wednesday, targeting a $320 million sale of precision guidance kits for bombs. The bill is anticipated to have co-sponsorship from fellow Democratic lawmakers. If both the House of Representatives and the Senate approve this resolution, the administration would be barred from transferring the bomb equipment unless President Joe Biden exercises a veto.
The arms deal between the Biden administration and Israel was agreed upon earlier this year, preceding the Gaza conflict initiated by Hamas on Oct. 7. However, it wasn’t until Oct. 31, after thousands had died in Israel’s offensive in Gaza, that the administration informed Congress about the gear transfer, designed to enhance bomb capabilities, as revealed by The Wall Street Journal.
The fate of Omar’s bill hinges on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, which must pass it before consideration by the full House. Given the Republicans’ majority in the House, who strongly support military aid to Israel, the prospects of the bill advancing are uncertain.
The potential introduction of a similar bill in the Senate would trigger an automatic vote in the upper chamber. In the past, Senator Bernie Sanders employed this tactic to push for a Senate vote on aid to Israel during the 2021 Gaza campaign.
Josh Paul, a former State Department official critical of Biden’s Gaza policy, views Omar’s action as a significant statement, emphasizing the destructive capabilities Israel has employed in Gaza using similar bomb equipment. Despite recognizing the uphill battle, Paul sees it as a potential turning point in addressing the issue.
There are expectations of additional resolutions in the coming days opposing various aspects of U.S. military support for Israel. However, facing bipartisan commitment to the country, these resolutions may encounter formidable obstacles. Representative Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.), ranking Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, has already voiced opposition to the Biden administration’s attempt to expedite weapons to Israel without normal oversight.
