leiby-kletzkyAn intense two-day search for Leiby Kletzky has ended in the arrest of a 35-year-old man who is suspected of killing 8-year-old Leiby after his dismembered body was found in two different locations by police.

Records from a dentist’s office led police to Levi Aron, 35, who was taken into custody early today after Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said he implicated himself in Kletzky’s death.

Around 2:40 a.m., detectives went to Aron’s home at 466 East Second Street where they found part of Kletzky’s body inside a refrigerator.

When investigators arrived at the home, they asked where the boy was and Aron pointed to the kitchen. There, they found blood on the refrigerator handle.

“Inside the refrigerator was a cutting board with three carving knives with blood on them,” said Kelly. “Some of the remains were in the freezer.”

Aron lives alone in the third-floor apartment in a building shared with his parents. Kelly said he has lived there for two years.

Police said Aron had moved back to Brooklyn after living in Memphis, Tenn. for several years. Investigators will be contacting authorities in Tennessee to piece together the details of his life, Kelly said.

Detectives found the other half of Leiby’s  remains wrapped in a black plastic garbage bag inside a red suitcase in a dumpster in Sunset Park, about two miles from Aron’s home.

The medical examiner’s office will determine a cause of death.

Police used two surveillance videos to search for clues in Kletzky’s disappearance.

One video showed the young boy leaving his day camp, located at 12th Avenue and 44th Street, at 5:05 p.m. and walking past his home on 15th Avenue. He was supposed to meet his mother at 5 p.m. Monday at the corner of 13th Avenue and 50th Street.

Kelly said police believe Leiby got lost on his way home and stopped at 18th Avenue and 44th Street, where he is seen on video talking to Aron and is later seen getting into Aron’s gold-colored sedan. Kelly said there was no indication he knew the suspect.

Police said according to statement Aron made, he brought the boy to his apartment, killed him there and dismembered the body.

Aron was tracked down after investigators looking for Kletzky noticed a man on the video going into a nearby dentist’s office around 5:30 p.m. Monday while Leiby waited for across the street.

The dentist, who was later found in New Jersey, said Aron wasn’t a patient but was paying a bill for a patient there and police were able to find him using those records.

Leiby’s disappearance prompted an intense search, with much of the frum community taking to the streets to lookfor the boy.

Kelly said Aron panicked after seeing flyers of Leiby around the neighborhood and killed the boy.

Assemblyman Dov Hikind said the boy was the only son of the Kletzky’s five children and said the husband works as a driver for a private car service.

“It’s just a horror for every parent,” Hikind said. “I mean it’s just a tragedy today for everyone in New York.”

Leiby had begged his parents to let him walk home. They had given him a note, saying he would not be taking the bus.

Kelly said that his parents had gone over the route Leiby was supposed to take home with him before letting him walk it alone.

“They were horrible yesterday when the child was not there, hoping that they’ll find him, but now forget it,” Hikind said. “How does a parent live with their little child brutally assaulted, murdered, dismembered?”

Hikind said the parents do not know Aron, who lived about a mile away from the boy.

  1. HY”D OF THIS LITTLE PRECIOUS NESHAMA LEIBY Z’L, NO WORDS CAN DESCRIBE THE ATROCITY AND THE PAIN THAT THE FAMILY IS GOING THROUGH. MAY HASHEM GIVE THEM THE KOACH TO GO ON AND FIND SOME NECHAMA , AND MAY WE SEE MESIACH BEMHARA BI’YAMNU AMEN. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHEN THE LEVAYA IS GOING TO BE ?

Every abused kid is mutalated & dismembered emotionaly & it keeps repeating itself through out life.
After hearing the story, I also felt he paniked, because of the fanfare, but he had already abducted a kid, and obviously had abused him. Did he expect another cover-up & mesira claim to save him jail time?
He also had the murderous equipment ready, and must be some kind of a phsycopath. I guess he decided to hide the evidence.
I hope that leiby Z”L HY”D petira will be a wake-up call, & all closeted cover-up pedophiles will be given a chance to hand themselves in or be given over by our Rabonim & Roshei Yeshiva, like the Belzer Rov did recently.[No matter who they are or how large of a family they may have, they must be removed from society or properly monitered]
It is hard to believe that in any other community the crime would be solved so swiftly, think about Jacee Lee Dugard.

  3. I know this is so insignificant, but this paragraph makes no sense. “One video showed the young boy leaving his day camp, located at 12th Avenue and 44th Street, at 5:05 p.m. and walking past his home on 15th Avenue. He was supposed to meet his mother at 5 p.m. Monday at the corner of 13th Avenue and 50th Street.” How could Hakodosh Leiby have been walking past his home on 15th Ave., if he was walking down 44th St. till 18th Ave., missing his turn onto 13th Ave.? Or do you mean, “walking past the avenue of his home, which is situated on 15th Ave”? Thank you for keeping us all informed. May HKB”H the Av HaRachamon, protect us from future tragedies.

  4. Teshuva Teshuva! How could this tradegy have occured! There has been nothing like it since the holocaust! This could have happened to any of us racmona litzlon! The tefilos now should be just as intense as they were during the search. The parents need major siyata dishmaya to cope with this abnormal tradegy, something that could take anyone out of there mind! Yehi Zichroi Boruch

  5. abc is reporting that other boys in the camp say this man previously offered rides to and from camp. maybe or maybe not true, but the adults in our community need to have better guidelines, addressing finer points, of how to explain to our kids who is a stranger? This question is not easy, it is complex, there are many justifications a child can think of to tell himself, this person is probably not really a stranger…..

  6. One possibility here is that drugs were involved. If the suspect uses drugs, then almost anything is possible. Some drugs such as PCP (“angel dust”) or methamphetamine can cause irrational violent behavior. So can heavy use of cocaine. One incident I know of in my former neighborhood involved a young man who simply walked up to a young woman in the street and stabbed her. He went home and told his father, “Dad, I think I just killed somebody.” He was high on PCP at the time. Unfortunately, the young woman bled to death before help could arrive.

There are also prescription medications that can cause psychotic behavior. But the question arises that in previous generations such behavior by a frum Jew would be almost unthinkable. What has changed? For instance, in reading the talkbacks here and elsewhere I have seen comments that are so violent, and advocate such violent punishment for the perpetrator, that I’m beginning to wonder where it comes from. Torah prescribes the death penalty for certain aveiros, but always with strict controls, and in the least brutal manner possible. How have we come to the point where we ourselves can talk about brutal executions and mutilation? Hanging somebody from a lamppost in BP after first mutilating him is not da’as Torah – it’s more tabloid newspaper talk. Let’s evaluate our responses with Torah values – punishment – yes, brutality – no.

  7. I haven’t checked his yichus but he appeared Jewish and has a Jewish name.
@ oldtimer – while you make a couple of valid points, such behavior is unthinkable of a frum Jew today also. This man is simply not a frum Jew. What makes someone frum is a commitment to the 613 mitzvos. There were sickos and disturbed people in past generations too, it’s not a new thing.

  8. The people in Brooklyn have to start changing things NOW. The situation is now totally out of hand. Demand real leadership!

  9. #14 – We’re not talking frumkeit here – we’re talking major-league psychopathology, like drug use, severe mental illness or medical problems. It has nothing to do with frumkeit. Irrational is irrational, period. According to another article, his coworkers found him strange and difficult, although a hard worker. Another acquaintance referred to him as a “loner.” These are signs that something is not well with a person. I suspect there is a lot more to be told here, and I think that Levi Aron will soon join Sam Berkowitz on a very, very secure mental ward.

I don’t believe a Jewish person could do such a thing

  11. “These are the same sick people who are seeking to legalize same gender marriage”

    ???? ??? ??? ??? ?? ???

  12. No, he wasnt born with an animals heart, he had a transplant! This is a heartless act! No words anyone can say can comfort this family. The Ribono SHel Olam Himself will comfort them. May we all live to see the coming of Moshiach SOON!

  13. if you look at the surveillance video of Leiby you see clearly that he was waiting for Aron. FIrst Leiby thought Aron would come from one side; then either Aron called him from across the street or he on his own realized he was looking the wrong way.

Also, no conversation took place between them. It seems they had a previous arrangement to meet and Leiby simply knew to follow Aron from a few feet behind (so as not to raise pasrsby who may have known Leiby suspicion and might ask Leiby who this man is)

WHy is it being covered up already that obviously this was not the 1st encounter btwn Leiby and Aron?!?!?

WHat happened here is a pedophile who b/c of the publicity thoguht that there was no way he could continue hiding the truth so he killed Leiby and tried to dispose of his body in an effort to erase all evidence.

Shame on the police for lying to the public.

  14. Are we also killing Jews? Are we perhaps dis”member”ing each other?this is a horrific wakeup call to look at ourselves and avoid murdering each other with words and condescension as chazal equate humiliation with slaughter.may our new tolerance and respect for each other be a zechus for Leiby.
