A picture posted Friday to the popular Reddit website showing a young girl and a National Guardsman on the streets of Baltimore has drawn more than 2.5 million views so far.
The image was taken by Amanda Moore, 26, an Annapolis-based activist and writer, who said she spent the past week in the city trying to assist in efforts against police brutality.
Moore observed the interaction between the girl and the soldier on Friday, just after charges were announced against the six officers in the case of Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old convict who died while in police custody. She said she did not know the identity of the soldier or the child.
“When I took it I thought it was actually sad because I couldn’t imagine having to explain to kids why the streets look like this,” said Moore, a graduate of University of Maryland. “To show the tragedy really of what’s going on and how it’s affecting people throughout the city.”
Many viewers and commenters on Reddit found the scene “heartwarming,” she said. “Nobody saw it the way I saw it.”
But Moore said at the end of the day, the image speaks for itself and she’s pleased by the favorable reaction. “As long as it gets people thinking about Baltimore in a positive light.”
