alsterToday, hundreds of bnei Torah will gather at a hachnosas Sefer Torah at the Yeshiva Gedolah of Cliffwood, NJ. The Sefer Torah is being dedicated by Mr. Raphael Hertzka in memory of his father, Rav Yaakov Yitzchok Herzka zt”l.

The story of this Sefer Torah began a while ago. Rav Shimon Alster serves as both rosh yeshiva in Cliffwood and rov of Bais Medrash Torah U’tefila in Flatbush, were Mr. Hertzka is a mispallel. Rav Alster’s acclaim as a mechanech renowned for his expert hadrachah and warm kesher with his talmidim stretches back over forty years beginning at the Mesivta of Long Beach.

Two years ago, the rosh yeshiva travelled to Eretz Yisroel to daven at mekomos hakedoshim and to visit the gedolei Eretz Yisroel escorted by a number of mispallelim of his shul. After an uplifting Shabbos of chizuk in Yerushalayim, they joined together for a melava malka with alumni of the Cliffwood Yeshiva who were learning in Eretz Yisroel. The talmidim capitalized on the opportunity to reinforce their connection with their rebbi and listen to words of hisorerus from him.

That evening reached its climax as Mr. Hertzka dramatically drew the first yeriah of a Sefer Torah from his pocket. He had witnessed the yeshiva‘s phenomenal growth, from its humble beginnings just six years ago with 25 bochurim to its status today as one of the leading American yeshivas and a bais medrash resonating with the kol Torah of nearly 80 bochurim. He was inspired by his awareness of the intensity of the relationship between the talmidei hayeshiva and their rebbi, his rov. He was heartened by the kesher he felt with the yeshiva, by virtue of the tie that binds them, the Torah that they learn from their mutual rebbi. He therefore decided to show honor to his rov and further increase his connection with the yeshiva by writing a Sefer Torah whose home would be at the Yeshiva of Cliffwood.

This Sunday, this story reaches an important milestone, as, amidst song and dance, the Sefer Torah will be completed and escorted to its new home. Be’ezras Hashem, the limud haTorah at the yeshiva will continue to grow and increase, forging ever stronger and everlasting bonds.

Today’s event will be attended by Rav Yeruchem Olshin, rosh yeshiva of Beth Medrash Govoha in Lakewood, NJ. The kesivah will take place at 1:30 p.m. at 682 Keyport Avenue. The Sefer Torah will then be danced, at 3:15, to the yeshiva at 200 Center Street in Keyport, NJ. A seudas mitzvah will follow.
