Opposition leader Isaac (Buzi) Herzog visited Rav Chaim Kanievsky to present him with seforim of his grandfather, former Chief Rabbi Yitzchok Halevi Herzog (1888-1959). Rav Chaim was excited to receive the seforim.

“Buzi asked me to arrange a meeting for him with Rav Chaim as he had issued a new edition of Rav Herzog’s seforim and wanted to give them to Rav Chaim,” said MK Eliezer Moses. He noted that Rav Chaim pointedly told Herzog, “Your grandfather used to go with a beard and peyos,” while pointing to his own beard.

“Herzog was surprised to hear from Rav Chaim that he remembered his grandfather, Rav Herzog, very well,” Moses said.

Herzog told Rav Chaim that the sandek at his bris was none other than Rav Chaim’s grandfather, Rav Aryeh Levine, father-in-law of Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv. Herzog also recalled that Rav Elyashiv used to tell him, “Your grandfather revealed me,” in reference to Rav Herzog’s arrangement for Rav Elyashiv’s appointment as a dayan in Yerushalayim’s Beis Din Hagadol.

Buzi’s father become unreligious after serving in the British and Israeli armies. He had promised his father to provide his children with a religious education and sent Buzi to a religious school at the age of twelve and later to the Ramaz School when the family moved to New York.

  1. as always R Chaim did not put down another jew,but spoke with him and treated him very nicely
may we all learn ,how to treat others as our gedolim do

  2. Nu, halivuy Buzi should be chozer betshuva. Hopefully something good will come from the meeting.

  3. It is interesting that in Rav Herzog’s Sefer there are tens of Teshuvos from Rav Herzog to Rav Elyashiv.
The Chazon Ish, the Techebiner Rav and many other great Poskim were alive and yet Rav Elyashiv asked
Rav Herzog. It is possible he did so being Rav Herzog was his boss.

  4. As the Gemara in Ksuvos says, “He who lives in Eretz Yisrael…”. Over there, even a left wing politician is sharing sforim with talmidei chachamim, while us “frume yidden” in chutz la’aretz are hocking a tcheinik on the internet.
