dov-hikindOnce it became clear that the jobs of the Kosher Food inspectors in New York State would not be restored, people worried that the individuals within the food industry might not be as vigilant in ensuring

a continued level of protection. After speaking with Commissioner Darrel Aubertine this morning, Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn) was reassured that the incoming commissioner will do everything possible to make Kosher Enforcement work.

“I applaud Agriculture and Markets Commissioner Aubertine and Governor Cuomo for giving New Yorkers, who adhere to a strict kosher diet, the peace of mind they deserve,” said Assemblyman Dov Hikind.

Kosher Division Director Rabbi Luzer Weiss will develop and implement the training programs for New York’s 85 food safety inspectors. “I have been assured by Rabbi Weiss that New York’s food inspectors will be trained properly and carry out this job effectively,” said Assemblyman Hikind. In addition to the training of these inspectors, the NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets will continue to maintain an on-line registry of food products that are represented as Kosher.

The former Kosher Food inspectors conducted nearly 5,000 inspections a year. “In these difficult economic times, it is vital that New Yorkers know they can depend on their government to ensure a continued level of kosher food protection,” said Assemblyman Hikind. “New York State will not neglect its constituents in order to save money.”
