Hikind Pushes For 51st Street Bridge To Ease Traffic From Boro Park To Flatbush

New York State Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn) has asked the NYC Department of Transportation to perform a feasibility study in the hope of erecting a bridge between 18th and 19th Avenues on 51st Street. This bridge would alleviate the current traffic congestion, which will increase dramatically as the result of a new development being built directly off 50th Street (between 19th Avenue and Dahill).

“51st Street dead-ends between 18th and 19th Avenues—this has always created a bottleneck of traffic,” Hikind explained in a letter to Polly Trottenberg, Commissioner of the New York City Department of Transportation. “The new development will effectively quadruple local traffic once people move in. A bridge would make all the difference, allowing traffic to flow much more easily from Boro Park to Flatbush. Addressing the traffic congestion in this part of my district would be an enormous benefit to all of our residents.”

Hikind and his community liaison Chesky Klein recently met with residents from the area to discuss the viability of a bridge.

  1. Kol hakavod. If it can be done, that would be a great idea. The shaila is, will it negatively impact those that live on that block?

  2. This is a great idea!

Two more that should be considered:

Ave I should go straight through again. The railroads between east 15-16 can have its elevation begin earlier and allow cars to pass underneath.

Ave K should be opened up to go into Ocean Parkway. Once Ave I will be through street, Ave J and K can be turned into one-way streets – just like 13th and 14th Ave. It will be a huge, huge difference in the currently unbearable traffic.

  3. I think it’s time to convert the old LIRR tracks (the “dead end” after Ave I) into a road. Just build a few ramps to access it from main intersections, such as Ocean ave, Coney Island, 18 th ave, etc, and you will have a beautiful route from BP to Flatbush.
