Hillary Clinton accuses President Donald Trump of having waged an “assault on our democracy” during his first two years in office and urges Americans to fight back in a scathing new essay published by the Atlantic on Sunday night.
In the essay, Clinton, the 2016 Democratic presidential nominee, writes that the Republican who defeated her has pursued policies of “unspeakable cruelty,” including separating migrant families at the border.
She accuses Trump’s administration of “monstrous neglect” of Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria ravaged the island. And she takes Trump to task for continuing to call the special counsel’s investigation into Russian election interference a “hoax.”
“Trump and his cronies do so many despicable things that it can be hard to keep track,” Clinton says. “I think that may be the point – to confound us, so it’s harder to keep our eye on the ball. The ball, of course, is protecting American democracy. As citizens, that’s our most important charge. And right now, our democracy is in crisis.”
“I don’t use the word crisis lightly,” she says. “There are no tanks in the streets. The administration’s malevolence may be constrained on some fronts – for now – by its incompetence. But our democratic institutions and traditions are under siege. We need to do everything we can to fight back.”
The essay is adapted from the afterward of the paperback edition of Clinton’s memoir, “What Happened,” which will be published this week.
In the essay, Clinton also accuses Trump of “waging war on truth and reason” and “breathtaking corruption” and says he is undermining “the national unity that makes democracy possible.”
Since her 2016 loss, Clinton has stepped up her criticism of Trump and his policies. In recent weeks, she’s been actively fighting his nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.
Trump, meanwhile, continues to use Clinton as a foil, criticizing her at political rallies and calling for investigations of her actions while secretary of state.
