The Biden administration has unveiled a proposal to strengthen the efficiency standards for new residential water heaters, a step aimed at benefiting consumers economically and addressing climate change concerns.
Under the draft rule, common-size electric water heaters would be required to use heat pump technology to enhance their efficiency, while gas-powered heaters would utilize condensing technology.
The Energy Department estimates that this proposal would lead to a reduction of 501 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions over the next 30 years, equivalent to the emissions of 134 coal-fired power plants in one year. Additionally, the department projects that consumers would collectively save $198 billion during the same period.
Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm emphasized the significance of the proposed action in improving efficiency standards for household appliances, resulting in reduced utility bills for American families and curbing harmful carbon emissions.
The department acknowledges that the financial impact on manufacturers is uncertain, with potential costs ranging from a loss of $207.3 million to a gain of $165.5 million by 2059.
Energy efficiency rules, particularly concerning gas stoves, have become a contentious topic in Congress, with the House Oversight Committee holding a hearing to discuss what the Republican majority describes as “the Biden Administration’s Regulatory Assault on Americans’ Home Appliances.”
