Deposed Egyptian strongman Hosni Mubarak is in a coma, his lawyer said today. Mubarak has been receiving treatment in a medical facility in Sharm el-Sheikh since he was ousted in February.
A medical official at the facility denied the report and said the 83 year old Mubarak was in stable condition. However, CNN has reported that Mohamed Fathalla, the head of the medical facility where Mubarak is being held, confirmed Mubarak’s condition Sunday evening.
“Yes, he is in a coma,” Fathalla reportedly said.
Mubarak, who is said to be suffering from heart trouble, is under arrest at the hospital even as he receives treatment. There have also been reports he is suffering from cancer. However, reports of his impending death have been rife for years.
“I was informed about the sudden deterioration in Mubarak’s health and I am now on my way to Sharm el-Sheikh,” Mubarak’s lawyer, Farid el-Deeb, told reporters. “Doctors are trying to bring him to consciousness. He is in a total coma. The president had a sudden stroke.”
Fathalla’s confirmation that Mubarak is comatose follows initial denials by hospital officials. A senior medical official in the facility said his condition had not worsened. According to MSNBC, El-Deeb has made other claims recently about Mubarak’s deteriorating health that were also denied by medical officials.
Mubarak is set to face trial in August on charges he ordered the killings of protesters during Egypt’s 18-day uprising that began in January. A conviction could carry the death penalty.
