Author and public speaker Sivan Rahav Meir said that a woman who was hostage in Gaza decided to keep Shabbos at the same time her mother in Israel accepted the commitment.

Rahav Meir said that she was about to launch an event in Herzliya on Friday night when Tzachi Weiss, who organized the event, told the audience: “We invited our dear friends, [the released siblings] Itay and Maya Regev, residents of Herzliya, whose family we all accompanied, and who finally returned from captivity in Gaza.”

“I spoke to their mother, Mirit, before Shabbos, and she told me the following: In captivity, Maya promised herself that for every Shabbos she is in Gaza, she would observe Shabbos once she is free. She spent seven Shabbosos in captivity, and this is already the third Shabbos she is observing.”

Weiss continued: “It turns out that without speaking to Maya, far from Gaza, in their Herzliya home, their mother decided during those days that when the children return from captivity, they would observe Shabbos.”

So, although the family was invited to the event since it was a long way from their home and Maya was still using crutches, the Regev family could not make it, Weiss said.

We hope and pray that Maya decides to make Shabbos observance a permanent fixture of her life.
