john-boehnerOne of the most powerful politicians in Washington is not too sweet on Mayor Bloomberg’s plan to ban giant sugary drinks.

House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) scoffed at Bloomberg’s controversial proposal during a Friday news conference.

“I like Mayor Bloomberg, but are you kidding me?” said Boehner when asked about the plan, which has received national attention.

“C’mon, don’t we have bigger issues to deal with than the size of some soft drink that somebody buys?” Boehner asked.

Bloomberg, in his latest effort to make New Yorkers healthier, has suggested a ban on sugary drinks larger than 16 ounces.

Stores that receive letter grades from the city – from restaurants to bodegas – would no longer be able to sell jumbo-size drinks.

Bloomberg, now registered as an Independent, was a former Republican but his plan has received little support from GOP leaders on Capitol Hill.

“You can’t make this stuff up, can you?” Paul Ryan (R-WI) said Thursday on CNBC.

“I gave up pop for Lent three years ago and I haven’t had any since, but do what you want,” Ryan said. “Do what you want with your life.”

Bloomberg has argued that research shows that when people are given larger portions, they almost always consume more.

City officials supported the plan by touting the success of previous fights against trans fats and cigarettes.

Opponents, including soda makers, have slammed the proposal as evidence that the city government has become a “nanny state” with too much power over its citizens’ actions.

  1. little do some of you know that if we all get together and fight this machla of indulging in processed sugar and chemicals, then we can increase positive health, and reduce medical bills. BOTH of which are very important to say the least.

  2. To #1 “health time”: it’s one thing to make an education/ awareness campaign, or even to flood companies who produce food products with pleas to voluntarily improve ingredients. It is quite another (and a totally unaccceptable) thing for the government to regulate what size drinks are offerred, or other such details. This is a very slippery slope for a country that is based on and prides itself on, individual liberties. Next comes a ban on fast food stores- including chap a nosh or kosher delight, even JII, then comes a requirement that each person perform a certain amount of hours of exercise per week, only in approved gyms, with monthly exercise details to be reported to some exercise oversight office. Sounds far-fetched? Remember, this soda regulation started with regulating and dictating how much trans-fat and sodium were being served. Now we have drink sizes (so instead of buying one 20 oz bottle they’ll buy two 16 oz bottles or instead of one super-sized fountain drink for all the family to share, they’ll get each kid or two their own drink). Just wait- allow government to control and dictate small details of previously free choice, and just watch the snowball roll down the hill along with freedom and individual liberties. ” life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” will become only the “pursuit of life.”
