obama-blackberryHe may be too busy to go to church as often as he would like. But President Obama can always find time to check his Blackberry. So when he needs a little inspiration in the mornings, Mr Obama revealed today that all he has to do is read the daily prayer emailed to him from pastors around America.

‘It’s a wonderful thing,’ the president said of his hi-tech devotionals.

Obama is the first president to carry a Blackberry and the first to use email, although only a handful of aides, family and close friends have his address for the handheld device.

He said that White House faith director Joshua DuBois forwards him a morning prayer every day from a selection sent in by some of the churchmen he met during his cross-country travels on the presidential campaign.

He added that he started getting the prayer alerts on the campaign trail and has carried on receiving them ever since

When Mr Obama first got into office, aides initially tried to take his Blackberry away, arguing his emails would one day be made public.

But the tech-savvy president resisted and instead got a specially designed one-of-a-kind custom Blackberry with top security features to allow him to speak on a protected line.

The embrace of technology was widely credited with helping Mr Obama build up grass roots support that helped propel him to the White House and has been a continuing trend of the Obama administration.

The president has repeatedly rejected gossip that he is a Muslim – based largely on the fact that his middle name is Hussein – and emphasised that he is a devout Christian.
