One in every five New York City residents has been infected with the coronavirus, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said, announcing additional preliminary results from a statewide antibody survey, the Daily Beast reports. According to the survey of about 150,000 tests, 12.3 percent of New York state residents have been infected with COVID-19 and tested positive for virus antibodies. In New York City, 19.9 percent tested positive; a majority of those residents were in the Bronx. The survey mimics similar findings from the state’s first, smaller survey on April 23, which took results from random testing of 3,000 people in supermarkets. The survey is part of a push to ramp up antibody testing to help solidify a plan to reopen businesses.
Cuomo said that while 299 residents died on Friday due to the virus, the state continues to be on a downward trend for hospitalizations, intubations, deaths and new cases. The governor also said on Saturday that 7 million face masks will be distributed to nursing homes and residents in city housing in an effort to protect those hit hard during the pandemic.

So if 20% of NYC have had it, that’s 20% of about 18.8 M = 3.76 M. Which is about 12 times more than the current reported total (according to https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/us/ ). In which case, the death rate is actually about a 12th of what they thought, ie. not the 0.1242% currently reported, but rather about 0.01%.
In other words, about the same as a common flu. Adjusting for the massive lockdowns, then it puts it at about the level of a bad flu.
Yasher koach for shutting down world economy due to your paranoia and the modern idea that it’s taboo to get sick.
Pathetic, if not for the fact that it’s all min haShomayim.
Sorry, Reb Anonymous, NYC population is 8.8 million. 20% is 1.76 million.
NYC has 13,156 confirmed COVID deaths and 5,126 probable COVID deaths, for total of 18,282: https://www1.nyc.gov/site/doh/covid/covid-19-data.page
This gives a death rate of 1%. But the number of deaths is probably understated by a significant amount. It doesn’t count many people who died at home, in nursing homes, etc. Regarding nursing homes, see here: https://nypost.com/2020/05/02/nyc-nursing-homes-staggering-coronavirus-deaths-dont-match-state-reports/
The biggest antibody test so far leaves much to be desired. There can be a clear argument made that supermarket goers are not necessarily indicative of the overall population. A proper blind test would have a computer program pick out 10000 addresses at random.
That’s 19.9% of the population that is out shopping. It does not include the young, the elderly, or those who do not leave their homes.
