In Call With Trump, Pelosi And Schumer Say Any Gun Bill That Doesn’t Include Background Checks ‘Will Not Get The Job Done’

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., on Sunday urged President Donald Trump to endorse House-passed gun measures and pledged to join him for a “historic signing ceremony at the Rose Garden” if the legislation is passed.

The Democratic leaders said in a joint statement that they spoke with Trump by phone Sunday morning at their request, 200 days after the House passed H.R. 8 and H.R. 112. The two measures, which would expand federal background checks for gun purchases and transfers, represent the first major firearm restrictions to advance in a generation.

The push for action comes amid public outrage over mass shootings across the country, including rampages last month in Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso, Texas, that left 31 people dead.

“This morning, we made it clear to the president that any proposal he endorses that does not include the House-passed universal background checks legislation will not get the job done, as dangerous loopholes will still exist and people who shouldn’t have guns will still have access,” Pelosi and Schumer said in their statement.

“We know that to save as many lives as possible, the Senate must pass this bill and the president must sign it,” they added. “We even promised the president that if he endorses this legislation and gets Senator McConnell to act on what the House has passed, we would both join him for a historic signing ceremony at the Rose Garden.”

In February, Trump issued a veto threat for H.R. 8, the expanded background checks bill passed by the House, arguing that it would “impose burdensome requirements on certain firearm transactions” and that it was “incompatible with the Second Amendment’s guarantee of an individual right to keep arms.” The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment Sunday.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has repeatedly said he would bring legislation to the floor only if it has the president’s endorsement.

In an exchange with reporters at the Capitol last week, McConnell accused Schumer of a “stunt” after the Democrat called on the Senate to take up the gun bill, which McConnell noted “the president already said he is going to veto.”

“My members know the very simple fact that to make a law you have to have a presidential signature. … And so, we do, in fact, await word from the White House about what the president is willing to sign,” McConnell said.

Polls show an overwhelming majority of the public supports tightening gun laws. A Quinnipiac University survey released late last month showed that 93 percent of Americans support background checks for all gun buyers, 82 percent support requiring a license to purchase a gun, and 80 percent support “red flag” laws allowing for guns to be taken away from people deemed to be a threat to themselves or others.

Trump has gone back and forth on the issue. Immediately after the El Paso and Dayton shootings, the president said “there is great appetite” for tightening background checks. But weeks later, he appeared to back away from his potential support for such legislation, shifting the focus from background checks to mental health in his public remarks on the matter.

In their statement, Pelosi and Schumer touted the House-passed gun measures as “bipartisan, commonsense legislation to expand background checks, which is supported by more than 90 percent of the American people.”

“Yet, for 200 days, Senator McConnell has refused to give these bipartisan bills a vote on the Senate Floor, again and again putting his own political survival before the survival of our children. … We will not stop until these bills are passed and our children’s lives are safe,” they said.

  1. “We even promised the president that if he endorses this legislation and gets Senator McConnell to act on what the House has passed, we would both join him for a historic signing ceremony at the Rose Garden.”

Hey funny face Nancy, “OUR” president doesn’t need you at the Rose Garden signing and Shoe-Muh, I’m sure the president won’t want to disturb your Sunday press releases so likely he’ll sign it on a Sunday morning!

  2. “80 percent support “red flag” laws allowing for guns to be taken away from people deemed to be a threat to themselves or others.”
Super dangerous clause to have in such a law. Unless it states clearly what the guidelines are for deeming someone dangerous then it could be a perfect way for the government to disarm just about anyone.

Here is a nice story about the future:

    Knock knock knock…

Policeman: “Good morning Mr. Schwartz. Based on article b174 in the Keep America Gun Free Act, we are confiscating your guns.”

Mr Schwartz: “Well, I am an upstanding citizen and have never expressed any animosity towards anyone. In addition, I support toeva marriage and live in a green home and recycle all of my renewable waste products. I don’t belong to any fringe groups and vote Democrat every time. In fact, I just VOTED for our newly elected Democrat president! I’m a model Democrat american citizen!”

Policeman: “well sir, you see, it says right here in your file that you are a Jew…er…I mean, you have the flu! You are hereby dangerous to yourself and the public so hand over your weapons.”

Mr Schwartz: “The flu? What’s that got to do with anything?!”

Policeman: “you see Mr Schwartz anywhere between 12000 and 79000 people died from the flu between 2010 and 2011. We are not sure exactly how many people were killed by the flu specifically or if maybe they had cancer while they had the flu or maybe they were older than 103 years old so we just figured since that’s really hard to figure out we will just focus on a scary mortality rate and make you get a flu shot… but I digress. The point is the flu is dangerous to the public and you have the flu!”

Mr Schwartz: “what’s that got to do with guns?!”

Policeman: “You’re missing the point, sir… Can someone have president Omar explain it to this guy?”

  3. Wapo Fake News has to rehash some old articles as Pelosi and Schumer haven’t been seen nor heard from for a while.

  4. “Polls show an overwhelming majority of the public supports tightening gun laws.” Guess who’s article this is? One guess.
