In a video message Friday afternoon, New York mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa responded to criticism of a 2018 speech in which he warned residents of the city’s suburbs that Orthodox Jews were trying to “take over your community” and were a drag on the tax system.

The Guardian Angels founder declined to apologize in the video shared with the media, instead inviting Orthodox Jews to sit down with him to “resolve our differences.” He also reminded potential supporters of his work on behalf of Jews.

“My two youngest sons have been raised Jewish. They need to read this? To say to themselves, my father is an antisemite? Come on, even my worst critics out there would recognize that’s a shanda,” said Sliwa, who became the Republican nominee for mayor on Tuesday. “So I’ll reach out to meet with you and hopefully we’ll be able to resolve our differences.”

The original video, which resurfaced Thursday, showed Sliwa at a meeting of the Reform Party in October 2018 speaking to residents of upstate Rockland and Orange counties. In his speech, Sliwa derided the Orthodox “bloc vote” and suggested they control politicians because of their money.

“They don’t vote the way normal Americans vote … They’re being told by the rebbe or rabbi this is who you vote for,” Sliwa said at the time.

  1. The liberal media and Democrats are trying to cancel Sliwa for some old comments.

But are they also targeting Eric Adams similarly? He made a comment re Farrakhan years ago that some don’t like.

  2. If he didn’t apologize he is clearly being reconciliatory. I sure hope those who criticized him take him up on the offer of a meeting.

Even if Farrakhan or Sharpton made such an offer saying the exact same thing(they never will and what can they possibly claim they did for the frum community? ) I would say grab it.

  3. This guy is a hater of the religious Jews, no matter his relationship with the secular Jews-in-name-only. It’s impossible to appease this kind of a hater, so don’t even try; this little jerk has zero chance of being elected anyway. Besides, he is not even remotely conservative: he was rabidly anti-Trump, and he just switched to the Republican Party a few months ago.

  4. But when Al Sharpton tells his ilk to vote for a particular candidate, that he has no problem with?! Or AOC?!
Yeh, that’s Curtis’s old shtick. Throw out a few Yiddish words that he knows and fool the gullible.

    • Based on other comments Sliwa made it’s safe to say that Sliwa feels the exact same away about Al Sharpton and AOC.

A complaint like yours should be directed against The New York Times and other liberal and secular Jewish groups who say the EXACT same thing as Sliwa did all the time. But they would ONLY say it about frum people. Not any other group engaged in the same behavior. And unlike Sliwa they never do anything to help the frum world

      • Can you please enlighten us as to EXACTLY what Curtis did to “help” the Frum community? Talk is meaningless and cheap. What did he actually do to “help” our community and our people? More important, how will HE help us in a concrete way if he gets elected?

        • He repeatedly sent his GA to neighborhoods which were facing dangerous anti-Semitism.

He received the ELIM award for his work on behalf of handicapped children in Isreal. And much more.

If you know so little about someone keep your mouth shut about untill you find out more

  5. Curtis even wants yeshivas to teach darwinism and other secular subjects that have nothing to do with earning a parnasah
