incandescent-light-bulbIncandescent light bulbs, which have been in use in the United States for more than a century, are on their way out in the new year. The federal government has prohibited their manufacture and import starting Wednesday.

The latest ban covers 40-watt and 60-watt bulbs. The 100-watt and 75-watt varieties had already been phased out. The bans were signed into law by President George W. Bush in 2007 as part of the Energy Independence and Security Act.

Opponents of the law protest that the government is making decisions for consumers rather than letting the marketplace determine the products people want.

  1. Since when has the Government “ruled” the people? Doesn’t the constitution say that, we the people rule the Government? We are heading downhill towards socialism.

  2. This isn’t technically correct. What the law does is to set fuel efficiency standards for light bulbs. If some engineering genius could come up with a more efficient incandescent light bulb it would be legal.

  3. Chuck, “legal” light bulbs that conform to an arbitrary government “efficiency” standard?

In a free market society, the marketplace sets the standard. In a socialist society, the government sets the standard.

It is technically correct to assert that the United States of America is well on its way down the slippery slope of socialistic government policy.

  4. Please note that this law was signed during the presidency of George Bush. It was intended to help free the US from dependence on foreign oil. The less need we have for foreign oil the less leverage oil-producing countries like Saudi Arabia have with our foreign policy.

  5. These new bulbs have been written up about and are considered dangerous; they contain mercury and must be very carefully handled because if they break, everyone must immediately leave the area because it is poisonous. Meshiguna velt.
