Shas and UTJ met to discuss the increasing public chillul Shabbos in Eretz Yisroel which is mainly due to the Transport Ministry allowing Israel Railways to utilize Shabbos to maintain rail lines.
“[Transportation Minister] Yisroel Katz is the worst minister ever for the chareidi public and the worst minister regarding Shabbos issues,” MK Gafni said at the meeting.
“The Israel Railways only upgrades all its tracks on Shabbat, which has not been the case for years,” Gafni added. “If this continues, we will go to the Gedolei Torah and get their decision whether to remain in the government.”
After the meeting, a statement was issued saying:
“We demand that the prime minister honor the coalition agreement to restore the status quo to its former position and to immediately stop unnecessary railway infrastructure work. The same applies to adding new [bus] lines on Shabbos and the lack of enforcement against pirate companies which operate public transportation on Shabbos.”
The statement added that a discussion of the matter would be held with the prime minister and relevant ministers and then brought to the decision of the Gedolei Hador.
