NYC Council Speaker Corey Johnson and seven other City Council leaders firmly embraced the “Defund Police” movement, calling for $1 billion in cuts to the NYPD’s $6 billion budget.
“We believe that we can and should work to get to $1 billion in cuts to New York City’s police spending in the Fiscal 2021 budget, an unprecedented reduction that would not only limit the scope of the NYPD, but also show our commitment towards moving away from the failed policing policies of the past,” Johnson (D-Manhattan) announced late Friday.
He was joined by Majority Leader Laurie Cumbo (D-Brooklyn), Democratic Conference Chair Robert Cornegy (D-Brooklyn), co-chairs of the Black, Latino and Asian Caucus I. Daneek Miller (D-Queens) and Adrienne Adams (D-Queens), as well as Finance Committee Chair Daniel Dromm (D-Queens), Capital Budget Subcommittee Chair Vanessa Gibson (D-Bronx), and Public Safety Committee Chair Donovan Richards (D-Queens).

All democRATs want police to be slashed. I hope on the next round of looting after the latest Shooting at a Wendy’s they continue the looting spree all through the upper east and west side. This will either get the liberals anti Trump crowd to wake up or leave New York. Reducing the liberals is best way to victory.
Liar. Joe Biden strongly opposed defunding police last week. Bernie Sanders, technically not a Democrat, did too, even calling for large pay increases.
However, we are going to see big cuts to police, not because it is a good idea, but because cities are broke thanks to the coronavirus pandemic and the refusal of McConnell and Trump to help cities out. Also, Trump himself proposed huge cuts to the one federal program that helps local police departments to hire officers. The “activists” who want to defund police are really working to re-elect Donald Trump, as they are on the same page here.
Liar. Joe Biden came out against defunding police last week. So did Bernie Sanders, who is technically not a Democrat. Jim Clyburn did so today. Andrew Cuomo has also done so.
Trump, however, called for massive cuts to the one federal program that helps police departments to hire officers. Trump and the defund police people are on the same side here: The wrong side.
Wake up and smell the flowers. We live in a Blue city in a Blue state. Our City Council are majority progressive. Besides Corey Johnson is going to run for Mayor so he is pandering.

There is nothing more critical than public safety. We need a much *larger* NYPD, with more and better training, and more and better pay. If necessary we must increase property taxes in order to accomplish that. We did that in the 1990s and that was instrumental in the drops in the crime rates.
Johnson lost my vote with this insanity.
HE is running for Mayor. He feels he has to pander to the extreme left-wing progressives.
