Inspector General: 3 DOJ Employees Leaked Info to Hurt Trump Before Election

The Inspector General of the Department of Justice released a report today revealing that three employees had leaked confidential information to the media in an apparent effort to harm Donald Trump’s chances in the election.

According to the IG report, it stated: “The Department of Justice (DOJ) Office of the Inspector General (OIG) launched an inquiry after receiving claims that actions taken by a division handling litigation were politically motivated and breached DOJ policies concerning the disclosure of information related to ongoing investigations. “The investigation found that three senior DOJ officials had violated the DOJ’s policies on confidentiality and media relations by sharing confidential investigative information with selected reporters just days before an election. This resulted in two articles being published, both containing non-public details about ongoing DOJ investigations. Additionally, one of these officials breached both the Confidentiality and Media Contacts Policy and the DOJ’s Social Media Policy by sharing links to the published articles via the department’s social media accounts.” … “The OIG also submitted its findings to the U.S. Office of Special Counsel, which holds exclusive authority to investigate violations of the Hatch Act, for review of whether the actions of these officials breached the Act.”

It remains unclear what specific investigation was leaked or what information was shared. The New York Post highlights a letter from Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA), which references a report from the Washington Post in August. That article suggested that Trump was under investigation for allegedly receiving $10 million from Egyptian president Abdel Fateh el-Sisi during the 2016 election.

Grassley’s letter states: “The reporting also mentions ‘classified U.S. intelligence,’ suggesting that DOJ and FBI officials may have leaked classified information to the press. This seems to be yet another instance where the Justice Department and FBI have shared sensitive material with the media while rejecting congressional requests for similar information. Furthermore, it appears that the Biden-Harris administration’s DOJ and FBI deliberately leaked this material, including possibly classified information, to the media around 90 days prior to the 2024 presidential election. This continuing interference in the election process by your agencies is yet another reason why the American people are increasingly losing trust in the institutions you are responsible for overseeing.”

The investigation into Egypt was reportedly conducted by Special Counsel Robert Mueller at the time but was abandoned due to a lack of sufficient evidence.
