A letter from US President Donald Trump to Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, urging discussions on Iran’s nuclear weapons program, was handed over to Iran yesterday through a representative of the United Arab Emirates, according to a report by Axios.
A spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry revealed that US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff passed the letter to Emirati officials during his recent meeting with UAE President Mohammed Bin Zayed in Abu Dhabi. The next day, the message was conveyed to Iranian authorities.
Last Thursday, Trump spoke with Fox News, confirming that he had sent a letter to Khamenei, pressing for negotiations.
In the letter, Trump expressed a preference for diplomatic talks with Iran. However, he made it clear that if negotiations proved futile, other measures would have to be considered, emphasizing, “because Iran cannot have nuclear weapons.”
Trump further reiterated that the United States is prepared to take necessary actions to ensure that Iran does not acquire nuclear capabilities.
“If Iran doesn’t negotiate, it will be very ugly for them,” he warned in his Fox News interview. “Iran can’t have nukes. Other options are available.”
Previously, Iranian officials denied receiving any correspondence from Trump. On Saturday, Khamenei firmly rejected the notion of talks, declaring that Iran would not succumb to pressure.
Just yesterday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian reaffirmed his country’s stance, refusing to engage with the US under coercion. “It is unacceptable for us that they (the US) give orders and make threats. I won’t even negotiate with you. Do whatever the hell you want,” Pezeshkian asserted.
