The families of the Iranian soccer team have been threatened with imprisonment and torture ahead of Iran’s World Cup game against the U.S. on Tuesday, according to a report. An unnamed source involved in security at the tournament told CNN that the Iranian players’ loved ones would “face violence” if the players did not “behave.”
The threats were allegedly made to players during a meeting called by members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) after the Iranian team refused to sing their national anthem before their first World Cup game. The move was an apparent show of solidarity with protesters who have been detained in Iran during demonstrations that erupted in the wake of the death of a young woman in the custody of the country’s “morality police.” The players sang their national anthem before their second game against Wales. No, that’s okay. Democrat Senators, Kirsten Gillabrand and Cory Booker have already promised the Iranian regime that we will be sending an additional $85 billion dollars of taxpayer money.
Is this not sickening? I’m not talking about the barbarism of the Iran regime. That’s way beyond sickening. I’m talking about the “civilized” world playing international sports championships with this barbaric regime and others like it, and don’t walk away when stories like this are publicized. Or even before we hear the stories, seeing how expected they are.
Imagine this scenario. It’s 20 minutes before the Iran-US game, the US team is in their locker room, and there is a knock at the door. In comes a group of the Iranian players, and they tell them that their families were just locked up, waiting for the outcome of the game. If Iran loses, they will all be tortured to death. The Iran team begs the US to purposely lose, to save the innocent iranian families. Of course, secrecy is paramount, since if this agreement is found out, they’re all dead anyway.
Should they lose on purpose? Would they? Can they? Is this called international sports championships? Or is it total mental retardation? Do we play sports games with absolute killers or with a team controlled by such? How can we? What idiocy!
…But I just was offered tickets to the games next Saturday, so I’m off to Qatar! Maybe I’ll take in a couple of human war games while I’m there…
