Arvin Nathaniel Ghahremani, the 20-year-old Iranian Jew who was convicted of murdering a Muslim man two years ago, faced execution on Monday. However, today, the Iranian Jewish community received news that his execution had been postponed until next month.

Significant international efforts were made to stop the execution, involving various international organizations and numerous countries.

Ghahremani’s family also urged the victim’s family to accept financial compensation instead of the death penalty, a practice allowed under Iranian law.

Initially scheduled for Shabbos, the execution was postponed to Monday for undisclosed reasons and has now been delayed again.

Several influential figures have called on countries, including Russia and Germany, to intervene and help halt the execution.

Iran is notorious for having the highest number of executions globally, with Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan trailing behind, where execution statistics are less precise. European human rights groups report that Iran has executed at least 223 people this year, including a substantial number of women. Last month alone saw the execution of 50 individuals, four of whom were women. In April, the figure was notably higher, with 109 men, six women, and two minors executed.

In 2023, Iran executed 834 men, women, and children, representing a 43% increase from 2022 and the highest number in nine years. In 2015, the number of executions in Iran reached 972.
