Iran has the technical capability to produce an atomic bomb but has no intention of doing so, Mohammad Eslami, head of the country’s atomic energy organisation, said on Monday, Reuters reports.

Eslami reiterated comments made by Kamal Kharrazi, a senior adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in July. Kharrazi’s remarks amounted to a rare suggestion that the Islamic Republic might have an interest in nuclear weapons, which it has long denied seeking.

“As Mr. Kharrazi mentioned, Iran has the technical ability to build an atomic bomb, but such a program is not on the agenda,” said Eslami.

  1. “Iran has the technical capability to produce an atomic bomb but has no intention of doing so, Mohammad Eslami…. said on Monday.”
When a reporter asked Mr. Eslami if this means Iran will definitely not produce an atomic bomb, Mr. Eslami, according to fictitious news sources, told him, “Not necessarily, because someone might produce the bomb unintentionally.”
Mr. Eslami went on to explain: “Just this morning, I stepped on someone’s foot by accident. It was completely unintentional, and, luckily, he accepted my apologies, and my band-aids.”
When the reporter asked Mr. Eslami how Iran would respond if someone unintentionally destroyed the country’s nuclear facilities with huge bunker-buster bombs, Mr. Eslami said, ‘I think we would all run and hide in an undisclosed location – unintentionally, of course.”
