Iranian Parliament Fires Economics Minister As Sanctions Loom

In another blow to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, the Iranian parliament voted to remove the current economics minister from office, amid the sharp decline in the country’s currency.

Minister of Economic Affairs and Finance Masoud Karbasian was removed from office, amid growing discontent over the economic situation in the country. Iranian media said 137 lawmakers voted to remove the minister, with 121 against.

The moves come after US President Donald Trump began reimposing sanctions on Iran following the US withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal, causing the Iranian economy to collapse.
