peres“In about 18 months, President Shimon Peres is going to re-enter the political arena,” Channel 1 newscaster Ayala Hasson said on Friday during her show “Yoman.”

According to Hasson’s report, the president told several close confidants, “Despite my age, a lot of people have approached me asking me to run for prime minister.”

Three parties have reportedly approached the elderly president, who declared that “all the options are open.”

Ayelet Frish, a spokeswoman for the President’s Residence, clarified Friday that “the story, and the responses that were issued, are simply not true. This is completely baseless.”

Meanwhile, Deputy White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest on Friday welcomed Peres’ remarks against a possible Israeli attack in Iran.

“We certainly were gratified to see President Peres’ comments on this topic,” he said.

U.S. President Barack Obama’s commitment to prevent Iran from gaining nuclear capability “is rock solid,” he said, and this is “something that we’ve conveyed in the many private conversations that are going on every day between the Obama administration and our counterparts and colleagues.”

Another voice supporting Peres’ vocal opposition was Israel’s fifth President Yitzhak Navon, who said Saturday, “There are situations when it is your duty to say what you believe, even if you are the president. If I were in President Peres’ shoes, I would have done the same thing.”

  1. Interesting, I had heard rumors that he intends to anoint himself as king and proclaim the beginning of a thousand years of peace and joy.
