ISIS, Al Qaeda Agree to Fight Together

turkey-isisISIS and al Qaeda reportedly have agreed on a plan to stop fighting each other and work together against their opponents. A high-level Syrian opposition official and a rebel commander told the Associated Press that militant leaders of the two groups worked out a deal in a gathering at a farm house in northern Syria last week. Such a deal would present serious difficulties for Washington’s strategy against ISIS.

Warplanes from the U.S.-led coalition have been striking jihadists from the air, but the Obama administration has counted on arming so-called moderate rebel factions to push them back on the ground.

Those rebels, already considered relatively weak and disorganized, would face far stronger opposition with the two heavy-hitting militant groups working together. Read more.
