Education Minister Naftali Bennett issued the draft of a new regulation requiring roshei kollel to pay compulsory group life insurance for their yungeleit.

Knesset Monetary Committee Chairman Moshe Gafni opposes the idea of taking the money from kollelim, saying he would only support the plan if the funds came from an external source.

“Today they’ll take from a yeshiva’s budget for important insurance and tomorrow they’ll take money for a hundred other things,” he said.

At the same time, Gafni arranged for yeshiva and kollel funding to be paid a week before Pesach even though it was still far from the end of the month.

  1. It’s a good idea for everyone to have life insurance but it is outrageous to force it on people. Particularly if only one segment of the population is being forced.

  2. I have an idea. The state should give everyone life insurance. Perhaps that will improve their consideration of the value of human life.

  3. Wrong! Please get your facts straight. MK Ariel Atias (Shas) introduced a bill around 2 years ago that would take an unspecified amount of money away from the huge grants that are given to yeshivos/kollelim, and instead invest it in life insurance for yungerleit. All the Rabbonim and frum MKs supported this bill. Except for Gafne (probably because of pressure from Kupat Ha’ir who offer similiar services).
