moshe-boogie-yaalonIsrael’s Defense Minister Moshe “Bogie” Ya’alon set aside a few minutes on Thursday to write the first letter in a new Sefer Torah being written in Israel in the merit of the soldiers.

Using a quill pen, he wrote the letter beis, of the word Bereishis on the parchment. Letters will be dedicated to every soldier in the Israel Defense Forces – those currently on active duty, as well as all reservists.

The sofer is Rabbi Mordechai Lishner of Kfar Chabad in Israel.

Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Aharonov, director of the Chabad Youth Organization in Israel, said during the ceremony: “We are assured that every soldier for whom a letter has been written in this special Torah will feel an added measure of security. In our tradition, the letters of the Torah are especially potent with regards to safety and security, and we felt it incumbent upon us to deploy this spiritual means of security for our troops.”

The defense minister then wrapped tefillin and recited a short tefillah.

Afterwards, he wrapped tefillin and recited a prayer. (Photo: Shalom Lavi)

  1. Without minimizing Mr. Ya’alon’s desire to connect with his Jewish heritage, the question must be asked, is he halachically qualified to write letters in a sefer Torah?

As far as I’m aware, a basic requirement is to be a shomer mitzvos, which Mr. Ya’alon is not known to be.

  2. To the halachic experts.
We know about the kashrus of the sefer Torah. But you have to worry about the kashrus of your mouth
    Hamayveen yuveen
And if don’t understand , learn about having siechel

  3. Moshe Ya’alon is a good man who understands the needs of the Chareidi community & respects their sensetivities. Kol Hakavod to him for writing the first letter. The picture above with Ya’alon wearing Tephilin is a little troubling, though. The Tephilin is way to large and is not sitting in the right place. Not sure why they always use these huge Tephilin. It makes it almost impossible to place it on the forehead correctly. It has to be Bein Eiynecha.

  4. To the so called lamdonim who question the kashrus of the sefer torah

  6. Interesting baki on missing hairline at viewing a picture. Personally I can’t tell where his hairline was.It varies among people. About large Tefilin see Sh. Ar. RZ”Sh simon 32 se’if 63, from The Geonim quoted by RA”Sh, and see Tosefos Eruvin 95b d”h makom. v’es vahaiv besufa Kidushin 30b. Dan Lekafzchus
