Israel refrained from replying to a Palestinian Authority (PA) request to allow East Jerusalem residents to participate in the upcoming Palestinian general elections, Hebrew-language outlet Ynet reported on Saturday.
Citing sources who are well-informed on the matter, Ynet reported that the final decision to “ignore” the letter sent by the PA came after top Israeli officials held discussions on the matter in the last few days.
According to Hebrew-language broadcaster Channel 12, the move was planned ahead with the expectation that Israel would refuse the request, therefore will relieve PA President Mahmoud Abbas from his public promise to hold the elections.
Mahmoud Abbas, the report stipulated, does not wish to test his popularity in the Palestinian street.
