Israel’s number of deaths related to the COVID-19 coronavirus may be higher than the official toll, a senior Magen David Adom (MDA) – Israel’s emergency medical service – official told Hebrew-language outlet Ynet on Sunday.

Dr. Rafael Strugo, the Deputy Director-General of MDA’s medical division, said that COVID-19 tests are not conducted for those who die in assisted living centers or at home, meaning they are not counted among the coronavirus victim tally.

“When someone dies at a geriatric center, in many cases, MDA is not called at all,” said Strugo. “An elderly person dies at a geriatric center, the establishment’s nursing staff, led by a doctor, declares their death and fills out a death certificate.”

The death toll in Israel from the novel coronavirus reached 172 Sunday morning, along with another 156 patients in a serious condition and 140 more described as being in a moderate state, according to the Health Ministry.
