The Israeli Bechadrei Chareidim website issued an apology to a group of women whose faces were blurred out of a photo it published and to pay each of them compensation, Haaretz reports. The group of women includes leaders of the Reform and Conservative movements in Israel as well as of Women of the Wall, the multidenominational feminist prayer group.

Haaretz reports that the Israel Religious Action Center had filed a suit in the Yerushalayim Magistrate’s Court in May against Bechadrei Chareidim for publishing the photo, citing gender discrimination. After the lawsuit was filed, the two sides agreed to enter into arbitration, and an out-of-court agreement was finally reached.

The apology was published on the homepage of the site just before Shabbos began, for the duration of an hour, and just after Shabbos ended, for the duration of an hour. Lawyers representing IRAC complained that this was not enough time for it to get proper notice, and Bechadrei agreed to publish the apology again for two hours on Monday morning.

  1. Given it is confusing, the chairedi do I think have lent right to live run and publish to meet Halacha. This is confusing because I thought there has been moderation of images.

  2. A chareidi website should do what’s expected from them and not fear repercussion from those who don’t understand their shita. No reason to apologize if you believe you’re following halachah.

  3. After the arbitration deal was agreed upon, one individual asked his friend if “the agreement essentially blurred the line between Charedi and non-Charedi.”
The friend replied: “I don’t know, that’s not clear to me.”

  4. Just don’t publish photos with women in them at all, much better policy and will avoid problems – not to mention that blurred out draws even more attention in a way.

  5. This is why all those who want no gender discrimination should TAG their phones so that even the men have their faces blocked.

  6. Apparently the readership of Matzav doesn’t understand the warped minds of the secular Israelis and their insane hatred of anything that has the faintest trace of anything related to keeping Torah and mitzvos as we know it. Obviously the news station had no choice, if they wanted to avoid being shut down, persecuted mercilessly and dragging the entire frum population into endless mud. Sorry, it can be tough, part of chevlei Moshiach. So, please do everything you can to hasten Moshiach’s arrival.
