The Associated Press is reporting that an Israeli man extradited to the United States was held without bail on charges he stole more than $1 million worth of art in Paris and tried to sell it in New York. The man appeared in federal court in Manhattan yesterday. He was arrested two years ago in Paris on an indictment returned in Manhattan in 2005.
The indictment accused the 55-year-old of trying to sell items stolen during three burglaries in Paris beginning in 1997. The stolen items included 200 Japanese antique miniature sculptures, a decorative antique silver bowl and 104 bronze sculptures.
The indictment said he tried to sell some items in New York in June 2000. The man’s lawyer, Robert Baum, did not immediately return a call for comment.
