The condition of the baby of a victim of Sunday’s shooting attack in the West Bank deteriorated overnight, and is now listed as critical.

The child was delivered by cesarean section after its mother was seriously wounded in the attack near Ofra, in which five other Israelis were wounded.

The mother was in serious, but stable, condition as of Monday.

The perpetrators of the drive-by shooting at a bus stop have not been caught and are the subject of an intense ongoing manhunt.

The Hebrew news site Mako quoted Dr. Alon Shwartz of Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem as saying of the the mother, Shira Ish-Ran, 21, and her child, “A woman arrived in a state of advanced pregnancy. She suffered from gunshot wounds in the area of the pelvis and lower torso. The woman arrived in critical condition, she had lost a great deal of blood at the scene. She received blood transfusions, stabilized, and was taken to the operating room for emergency surgery.”

The surgery, Shwartz added, involved “a Caesarean section to remove the baby and then an operation to treat her wounds. The baby is in the neonatal intensive care unit and is being evaluated.”

Shwartz noted that the woman’s life was still in danger.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said of the attack, “There was a terrible terror attack this evening. Everyone is praying for the well-being of the young mother who is fighting for her life — her baby was saved. We also wish for the swift recovery of all the wounded. We will not rest until these murderous criminals are found and brought to justice.”

“There are, of course, cries of joy,” Netanyahu added, referring to Palestinian statements of support for the attack. “I think it is too much to expect a condemnation from the Palestinian Authority. They only contribute to incitement here. Our security forces — the ISA and the IDF — are pursuing the murderers. They will capture them. We will deal with them to the fullest extent of the law and settle accounts with them.”

President Reuven Rivlin stated, “We are worriedly praying for the health of those wounded in the attack, among them the young woman who brought life into the world from the midst of the horror. I praise the quick medical treatment and clasp hands with all the security forces pursuing the terrorist without rest.”

  1. Don’t hold your breath. Judenrat’s idea of justice is treating islamonazis with mink gloves while throwing a book at Jews that dare to defend Jewish lives.
