President Reuven Rivlin called on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other right-wing politicians to immediately stop making “ugly statements” about Israel’s Arab politicians, as they “undermine the legitimacy” of their community.
Following a brief meeting between the two Israeli leaders, Rivlin’s office released a statement insisting that as a Jewish and democratic state, the country “must ensure equality of rights and respectful and meaningful discourse with all Israelis.”
Netanyahu has claimed that “the MKs of the Joint List support terror organizations” and “call Israeli soldiers ‘murderers’”.
The president said that such remarks “deepen the already existing divisions” within the state. “I ask everyone who cares about the State of Israel to stop these ugly statements.”
