A recent move by the Kochav Yair Local Council to ban private organizations from placing menorahs in public areas has sparked significant controversy among the local population.

The council’s decision has faced strong backlash, with Minister of Religious Affairs Michael Malchieli commenting: “For many generations, the people of Israel have marked the victory of the light over the darkness, and here (Council Head) Mrs. Hakmon-Ben-Harush to darken that light.”

In response to the decision, the Chabad House, which has traditionally set up a large public menorah during Hanukkah, has announced that it will comply, though they expressed regret.

“We are aware of many of the residents’ disappointment, but we will work totally according to the guidelines,” said Rabbi Dov Greenberg, the local Chabad shliach. “Peace is a very important value to us.”

Instead of a public menorah, the Chabad House will host a Hanukkah celebration at the local sports facility.

Council Head Hila Hakmon Ben-Harush defended the council’s decision, stating: “As opposed to what was in the past, Chanukah events will be run by the council and not private entities.”

She explained that the local and religious councils would place three menorahs in public spaces. In light of the backlash, the council has scheduled a special session for Sunday to reconsider its decision.

  1. USA Today: “Before he was president, Trump bought an estate in West Palm Beach, Florida. He put up a 50 foot flag pole and flew a US flag on it. The City Council told him that he could only have a 30 foot pole but he refused to take it down. They told him they would fine him $1,000 a day until he took it down. He said fine, that’s chump change. When the fine reached $120,000 he went to the city council and made a deal. He would lower the flag to a 30 foot pole if he could donate the $120,000 to the Veterans Affairs, to which they agreed. He took 50 foot pole down and had a landscape company come in and build a 20 foot hill where the pole was and put up a 30 foot pole. Lol… That’s why we love the guy.”

  2. Chabad has been abusing the concept of “Pirsumei Nisa” for ages. There is no such thing as a “Public Menorah” – no one is Yotze the Mitzvah with these menoros, and unlike those which are lit in Shul, as proscribed by Halacha, the blessings over these gigantic perversions are quite likely a ברכה לבטלה.
This never was an issue of “Pirsumei Nisa” – it was always about “Pirsumei Chabad” and now the advancement of their heretical concepts of Moshiach. It’s time the rest of the Frum world called it like it is.
