The Jewish community in Mumbai is grieving the tragic loss of two brothers, Alan and Israel Vasker, who represented India’s cricket team in the Maccabiah Games held in Israel.

The incident occurred when the brothers, aged 23 and 25, were boating in a remote area of the Alibag River on Monday afternoon. One of them decided to take a swim but was swiftly carried away by the strong current. In a valiant attempt to rescue his brother, the second sibling also jumped into the water but tragically, both of them drowned.

Israel’s Consul General in Mumbai Kobbi Shoshani said: “I met Alan and Israel during the preparations of the cricket team of the Jews of Mumbai before they left for the Maccabiah Games and I even got to join their practice. This is a huge loss for the family, the community and all of us. My heart is broken.”
