President Joe Biden marked the 11th anniversary of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program initiated by former President Obama. This program has allowed nearly 800,000 undocumented immigrants to avoid arrest and deportation.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Biden acknowledged the program’s participants by stating that the millions of undocumented immigrants enrolled in DACA, who are also eligible for the program, should be considered “Americans” despite their lack of United States citizenship and violation of federal immigration laws.
“Eleven years ago on this day, President Obama and I announced the DACA program to enable young individuals to reside and work in the only country they’ve known as home… DREAMers are Americans,” said Biden. He further added, “Many have spent the majority of their lives in the United States. They are our doctors, our teachers, and our small business owners. DREAMers strengthen our economy, enrich our workplaces, and during the COVID-19 pandemic, many served their communities on the frontlines.”
As previously reported by Breitbart News, the standards for the DACA program were set at a remarkably low level during the Obama administration. Consequently, between 2012 and 2018, approximately 53,792 undocumented immigrants with prior arrest records were granted DACA status. Furthermore, data shows that nearly 8,000 individuals who were initially granted DACA were later arrested for various crimes.
Surprisingly, over 30 individuals with a history of assault were granted DACA status, while ten individuals with murder charges and 95 individuals with kidnapping charges were also included in the program.
Biden highlighted that his administration is opening up Affordable Care Act benefits, commonly known as Obamacare and funded by American taxpayers, as well as Medicaid, to DACA recipients, even though Obama had stated in 2012 that undocumented immigrants would not be eligible for Obamacare.
The estimated cost to American taxpayers for providing Obamacare to all DACA recipients in the United States could reach approximately $2.8 billion annually. Biden expressed his hope that this step will encourage Congress to approve an amnesty for DACA recipients.
“My administration is committed to providing DREAMers the opportunities and support they need to succeed,” Biden emphasized. He further stated, “Only Congress can offer permanent and lasting stability for these young individuals and their families. Congress must take action to protect our DREAMers.”
Alejandro Mayorkas, the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), stated that under his leadership, the agency will continue to advocate for DACA recipients through legal means and actions until Congress provides a long-term solution.
“The Department of Homeland Security will persistently advocate for DACA recipients every day, both in court and through our actions, until Congress establishes a lasting solution,” Mayorkas assured.
