mccainSenator John McCain is refusing to back down after infuriating Tea Partiers for likening them recently to hobbits. During a town-hall meeting on Monday in his home state of Arizona, the Republican McCain came under fire when angry constituents asked him to apologize for remarks that he made during the debt-limit debate last month.

‘What was wrong that I said?’ asked McCain.

‘I don’t know what to apologize for.

‘I’m sorry if it was misunderstood,’ McCain added.

‘I’m not sorry for what I said. I mean, why should I when it’s the fact?’

The former presidential candidate drew a swift rebuke from freshman Republican fiscal hawks after he slammed Tea Party politicians and activists who threatened to derail House Speaker John Boehner’s debt plan, the New York Daily News reports.

He accused the cavalier lawmakers of being ‘Tea Party hobbits’ – the little creatures who feature prominently in the Lord Of The Rings series.

‘There was no way that a balanced-budget amendment would have passed the Senate,’ Mr McCain explained to his constituents at the meeting.

‘If anyone said that it could, they were not being truthful.

‘Hobbits are not real, and the point is that it was not real.

‘You shouldn’t deceive people and say that something like a balanced-budget amendment could happen.’

McCain was also criticized by another constituent who accused him of being part of ‘the old guard in Washington’ who contributed to the country’s fiscal woes, according to the East Valley Tribune.

  1. Credit to McCain a little bit- right movie, wrong creature. I would think that the Tea Partiers are really more like the Orks.

  2. #2 – right on. the big Orcs that Saruman created, not the little bitsy nasty ones. Frankly, I think that Mr. McCain was being way too gentle in his comparison. Hobbits are supposed to be cute and on the side of the angels. Tea Partiers remind me more of my New Left friends from the Sixties who generated their politics in a haze of pot smoke and LSD. In both cases, the theorizers were mentally living on some other planet.

I may not agree with either Mr. McCain or Mr. Boehner politically, but I respect them. They have paid their dues and know how to act and speak responsibly. Maybe when they’ve grown up a little the Tea Party types will achieve that too.

We need conservatives in this country too – real, no-nonsense, practical conservatives, not media-hungry mental teenagers.

  3. Apparently ‘hobbit” is from a kids’ fiction book.
I don’t have time to read such stuff. Do I have to read kids’ trash to know what a hobbit is??? I thought Mc Cain is a grown-up!

  4. To: Yehoshua Kehati. Do you have time to read your own trash instead? Childrens books have kept our children reading and enlightened for ages. What sort of human being are you to downgrade a popular storyline that has entertained children for ages?
