jon-voightThe people who are hospitalized in the Soroka Hospital in Be’er Sheva after being wounded in the rocket attacks over the weekend received a surprise visit on Sunday from none other than American actor Jon Voight.

Israel’s Channel 2 News reported that Voight came to the hospital to express his support for Israel and to strengthen those who were wounded.

“I am here to express my love and my loyalty to Israel,” Voight told Channel 2, emphasizing that he sees in his presence in Israel a mission, and that part of his job is to prevent the misperception of Israel in other countries.

“I’m here to fight the propaganda and lies distributed against Israel,” he said, adding, “Chabad has given me the opportunity to visit the wounded and I was glad to come.”

Voight, an ardent supporter of Israel, visited the country in January along with Republican politician Mike Huckabee.

During that visit Voight said that Jonathan Pollard did not have a fair trial due in part to anti-Semitism. He revealed the secret conversation between Pollard and his father that could have changed everything.

In the past, Voight authored a scathing open letter to President Barack Obama, accusing him of “putting Israel in harm’s way.”

  1. Voight impresses me the way that a bagel impresses me when it is half eaten. I just don’t get his presence as it just does not seem to thrill me in any way. I can not remember being too impressed by his acting or his comedy (did he have any?). But good luck!

  2. Used to think more of JonVoigt and thought he’s a ben Noach; but now suspicious, as he is always seen with the evangelists like Hagee & others. All these big evangelists are missionaries.

  3. I think we can be makir tov to goyim who do these things. I’ll admit I’m touched when I read these articles about him and Glenn Beck.

At the same time it needn’t mean we call them Noachides and make them out to be tzaddikim gmurim, chas v’shalom.

Christianity is sheker muchlat!! Beck’s Mormonism is probably even worse avoda zara than mainstream Protestantism and Mormonism because they outright believe in many gods, that the Creator himself had his own god/Creator, that we too can eventually becomes gods ourselves, so goes the LDS line. This is what Glenn Beck believes as a Mormon. One of course Jon Voight believes in Oso Haish, in Yeshu, a word that is the roshei teivos for “y’smach shmo v’zichro” as the seforim point out.

So we must be very careful in not praising these people, while still showing hakaras hatov.

In the sefer Halachically Speaking, there’s a chapter called “The Issur of Lo Sichaneim” with a piece relevant to this discussion: “One may not praise a non-Jew to say how nice he is. One may certainly not mention how great a person is. However, if one is doing so to give praise to Hashem, then it is permitted.”

  5. I appreciate this public figures support. He also happens to be one of the greatest American actors.

As speculated by posters here, does anyone know if he tries to convert yidden? I see he has some relationship with Chabad; which is a huge plus.

Many on the religious right support Israel, and if not for the wrong reasons, they still support Israel.

  6. Ignore the detractors writing here. John Voight is a VERY righteous gentile which advocates for Pollard, Gush katif, Israel as a whole and Chabad. I never heard him advocate Christianity or conversion to it. A lot of Rabbonim associate with Hagee too, so what’s your point Mr. #3?

  7. The danger for American Jewry is assimilation-Not evangelical Christians. Half of the Jewish college kids today have a gentile parent. This is not evangelism. It is disinterest. And within Orthodoxy, the single biggest reason cited by those who opt out is…. the behaviour of other frum yidden. Don’t worry about righteous gentiles such as Voight, Romney or Giuliani. Look in the mirror and you will see the face that has at best done little to assist or chalilah has caused others to move further away.
