rmiller3[Photos below of flag at Ateres Yeshaya, Lakewood.] Question: Displaying the American flag, is that considered a gentile ideal?

Answer from Rav Avigdor Miller zt”l

Let me tell you something, Fifty years ago I wouldn’t have spoken about that. I have been speaking more than fifty years in public; I didn’t speak about American flags. We don’t need it. Who needs American flags? It wasn’t necessary.

Today I say, if you want to do it, I say Yasher Koach. Do you know why? Because all the Reshaim are trampling on the flag, and they’re trying to desecrate America. You know why? Not because they’re good goyim, because they are Reshaim Gemurim; the liberals are trying to ruin everything.

And when that wicked Supreme Court permitted burning an American flag, and saying you cannot make a law against it, it was a desecration of America.

After all, America is a good country. We came from countries where we were persecuted, and this country gave us all the rights. I say we should kiss the ground of America. I was in Europe for some time; I went to study in the Yeshiva.

I came back and I saw this was a blessed country; it’s a gift from Hashem to us. Shouldn’t we appreciate it? And therefore I say a Jew should hang out the flag. Yes; today yes. I won’t say you’re a sinner if you don’t, but I think it’s a good thing to hang out the flag today. It’s not a contradiction, not a contradiction by any means.

We hang out the flag from this Shul on the Fourth of July.

See below for photos of an American flag hanging today at Khal Ateres Yeshaya in Lakewood, NJ. Khal Ateres Yeshaya is led by Rav Miller’s grandson, Rav Simcha Bunim Cohen. Rav Cohen’s mother-in-law, Rebbetzin Brog, is a daughter of Rav Miller.

  1. Yasher koach, very good!

By the way, there were similar things in Europe as well with Yidden participating in national holidays. I heard from someone from Poland that they used to gather in the Shul there during such a day and the Rav spoke, etc.

  2. There’s a new book titeled “Q&A Thursday Night’s With Rabbi Avigdor Miller” (over 400 Q&A’s)where the same questions was posed to Rabbi Miller, there he is also strong on this subject, and he encorges people to hang up flags. He adds a story with Reb. Yisroel Selanter read the tefila for the Gov’t when the gabbi skiped it.

  3. Rav Pam and Rav Henoch Leibowitz also would leave a bowl of candy out on Halloween, because they felt that showed a good neighbor policy and made for a kiddush hashem. I fly my flag proud every day, beause I am proud to be an American, and I think that others should be happy that they live in a country with a constitution, based on rule of law. Medinas Yisroel lacks a constitution and a rule of law, therefore you aren’t guaranteed any freedoms there. Soldiers and police pull Chassidim by the peyos, throw rabbonim in jail because they aren’t PC, and even brutalized beautiful yiddishe girls protesting the government’s forced eviction policies in Gush Katif, which shows that Israel doesnlt care about property rights, protection from the gov’t, etc., all rights we are granted by HaShem and that are enshrined in our American constitution.

  4. Agree with emes above. I fly the flag every day in gratitude for living in such a great country. Agree that Israel has some serious problems regarding its lack of a Constitution, etc.
Hope all enjoyed one of the nicest days in the year.
