bmg-small[Updated below.] Lakewood, NJ – We have just learned that Beth Medrash Govoha, the largest yeshiva in the Diaspora, has lost all power at its main campus on Sixth and Seventh Streets in the heart of Lakewood.

The power outage has also affected Yeshiva Ketana Elementary School, on Second Street, between Lexington and Monmouth Avenues.

Buildings and homes in the vicinity of Madison and Lexington Avenues, including Queen’s Apartments, have been affected. Various traffic lights on Route 9/River Avenue are out.

“The emergency lights are on in the yeshiva,” a yungerman at Beth Medrash Govoha told Matzav.com a few moments ago via telephone. “Otherwise, all the lights are off and power is out.”

Update, 11:13 p.m.: Matzav.com just spoke to three yungeleit at Beth Medrash Govoha in various botei medrash at the Seventh Street campus and power is gradually being restored. The blackout lasted for a total of about ten minutes, during which thousands of lomdei Torah were plunged into darkness.

Update, 11: 22 p.m.: “The olam continued learning without interruption, as best they could, with the light from the windows and the emergency lights that went on,” related a yungerman in the Bendheim Bais Medrash, otherwise known as the Bais Medrash Hayoshon, in the Adolph and Ethel Beren Building of the yeshiva on Seventh Street. “The bittul Torah was minimal, boruch Hashem, but it was quite a surprise for all to go dark so suddenly. No one knew what was transpiring.”

“Immediately after the lights went out,” remarked a second talmid of the yeshiva who had just passed the darkened Maariv Bais Medrash in the Hershey and Raisy Friedman Chaburah Center building , “someone mentioned that yesterday was September 11. We live in an age where our minds automatically think of these types of things. Sitting in darkness, one could only speculate. When we heard it was a simple blackout or power outage, we were relieved.”

  1. beautiful how the wonderful talmidim of this fantastic yeshiva react to such a thing: simply continuing to learn without interruption.

    What a kiddush Hashem!

  2. The yeshiva should have emergency lights run by a generator just for such occurrences. This summer there have been many more blackouts than usual. I assume things will get worse, not better, so they should be prepared.

  3. With all due respect can we not get bent out of shape? I have seen little kids continue learn in blackouts that lasted hours. Ten minutes w/o lights and we are singing the praises? get a perspective!

  4. The lights went on in my kindergarten classroom today for ten minutes too.
Believe it or not, my students continued davening as if nothing happened.
    Imagine…

  5. such a negative title to this article- i think its such a beautiful lesson for all us hockers-they kept on learning! Now where;s the praises

  6. MANY MESSAGES TO LEARN among them 2

1)the human being was made to take things for granted & therefore we sometimes need a reminder what it feels like without it, so we can start appreciating it again & give the proper thsnks to Hashem. WHAT better time to plunge into darkness then the day after 9-11 & during Elul?

2)when sadness & bad things occur, we naturally let it pass & convince ourselves that its coincidence due to not being able to face reality, when in fact nothing is coincidence & theres always a message & reason for something to happen.

DARKNESS IS A MESSAGE OF BEING WITHOUT HASHEM C”V
LET US START TESHUVA NOW BEFORE HASHEM PLUNGES US INTO DARKNESS…. C”V
