fresh-red-cabbageMatzav.com has received an advisory from the Va’ad HaKashrus of the Five Towns and Far Rockaway, which is guided by Rav Yosef Eisen, a renowned expert in kashrus and insect infestation.

The Vaad advises that there is a report of very high infestation in fresh red cabbage. Small white insects can only be detected if the cabbage is opened on top of a light box. This is extremely tedious and impractical.

The following sources are acceptable to be used: Bodek Cabbage, Postiv Cabbage, Dole Red Cabbage with the Star-K, and Dole Red Cabbage with a KAJ sticker.

Red cabbage from whole heads may not be used until the end of August.

  1. Red cabbage always had an insect issue al beit less then the green or white cabbage. Radicio, scallions, dried figs, strawberries, raisins are all infested.

The issue is that they are untrained to check for infestation. A little knowledge is very dangerous.

The J&R distributors that distribute the dole product with star-k, kaj, gruber, shutz, rappaport, etc certifed product is being machshil the tzibur.

When a Kaj, Gruber mashgiach checks a minute amount of samples on the Dole & finds infested, he doesn’t put the yellow KAJ-Gruber stickers. J&R pits on the othe stickers, Rapport, Shutz, etc knowing full well that it’s infested.
Therefore according to Halacha “hoitzei-neveilah-mitachas-yudoi” one may not purchase ANY product through J&R, as they are machshil the Tzibur.

The most qualified in checking for infestation is called the “Postive-system”.

  2. “Small white insects can only be detected if the cabbage is opened on top of a light box.”

If one can only see the insects on a light box I would say that would NOT be considered a valid prohibited insect since it is not visible to the naked eye under normal circumstances. It is similar to finding bugs via a microscope.

  3. Ok. I’ll just add it to the list of foods that people have eaten for thousands of years but that is now apparently forbidden

  4. They can be seen by the naked eye, but it’s easier on a light box. See Mishnah berurah (pesach) bring the Chasam sofer “You must use MUMCHIM to inspect vegetables or don’t use them” end of quote.

The mumchias is to be able to see even though its camouflaged.

  5. Looking at vegetables on a light box is not the same as looking under a microscope. They are fully visible to the naked eye. The lightbox only makes it easier to spot them. It doesn’t magnify what you wouldn’t see otherwise.

  6. Wow, according to this, the insects know that in 5 days AUG 31st they aren’t supposed to be in red cabbage. The same insects can read on the other prechecked “nokei-mai’chasash” etc.

  7. Hey modern guy, in these modern times the government pulled back on alot of insecticides.

But if you must eat them bugs atleast chew very well so it won’t be a whole Berya.
