What does DE mean? A DE product does do not contain actual dairy ingredients, but it is manufactured with heat on dairy equipment. DE items may be eaten after meat, but not with meat at the same time.

Many products qualify to be DE but are labeled OUD because OUD is a less confusing symbol for the kosher consumer. Also, to be a true DE product, the equipment must be properly cleaned of residue after dairy production, and that level of cleanliness is sometimes difficult to maintain and guarantee.

Please note that it is possible that the manufacturer will reformulate this product and add a true dairy ingredient. You will not be able to know this, since the OUD kosher symbol will remain the same. We recommend that you contact the OU office every few months to reconfirm the DE status of this product.

  1. I eat cholov stam, yet years ago when oreos got the OU hechsher I was super excited to be able to finally taste the “fabled” OREOS!
Well sorry guys, gotta tell you Paskesz Treos beats them hands down. Paskesz Treos are AWESOME!
Although lately unfortunately they’re not as good as they used to be. I guess everybody’s looking for a way to make things cheaper

    • There are “organic” or otherwise “natural” alternatives to Oreos that taste more like food as opposed to Oreos.
Either way, I would definitely check out the frum brands before buying Oreos.

  2. Also, most people who only consume chalav yisrael would not have a problem with DE.

That said, Chabad rules against consuming items made on equipment that was used for milk that isn’t chalav yisrael. (I.e. milk that Rav Moshe Feinstein would call “chalav ha-companies”.)

  3. According to Sephardic tradition (consult your own rabbi), parve items cooked with dairy equipment MAY be eaten with meat. I.e.

    • FALSE!!!

Get the facts before you are machshil people.

Speak to any Kashrus expert who will explain to you why you are wrong.

  4. There is a second problem/issue with the cookies, since milk came from cows that had operations on them and are Treifos. DE doesn’t help for this!

  5. Anyone know what’s really going on here? Like if someone is extremely allergic to milk? Or if i don’t eat חלב סתם. I’m assuming חלב סתם isn’t a problem if it’s not a milk and meat issue. I understand that this is not where I should be resourcing my halachic verdicts… just throwing it out there if anyone has any insight.
