The kever of Rav Shimon Bar Yochai in Meron will be closing to visitors starting Thursday after no insurance company has agreed to insure the site due to the terrible tragedy involving the deaths of 45 people on Lag Ba’Omer.
In a letter to Minister of Religious Affairs Matan Kahana, the director of Rav Shimon Bar Yochai’s kever, Eli Freund, explained that the committee on whose behalf he works and which is responsible for the site all year round is now liable for everything that takes place at the site. – but on the day of the celebration the state takes the reins.
“Prior to the disaster, the ‘Committee of Five’ – the five organizations responsible for the site – had been insured on a regular basis throughout the years, with no issues in this regard. Now, due to an tragedy on Lag Ba’omer, the committee’s members are exposed to personal tort claims if someone is harmed on the site.”
Freund added that “the Committee of Five has made and continues to make great efforts to find a solution to the problematic situation that has arisen,” and remarked that despite a meeting last month with Minister Kahana, in which he instructed professionals to assist immediately, the issue has yet to be resolved.
“Following the situation,” he concluded, “I would like to inform you that if no solution is found in the form of an indemnity letter and/or an insurance policy for the Committee of Five, the Committee will be forced to announce the closure of Rashbi’s kever starting on Thursday, 12/16.”
