On Thursday, a chassidishe couple from Brooklyn, NY were on a trip on Governors Island with their children when they found a wallet containing $1,400 in cash.

What does a Yid do?

He does the right thing.

The frum family contacted State Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein, who was able to track down the owner of the wallet, a man named Christopher Collins from the Bronx.

In a video shared with Matzav.com, Eichenstein is seen presiding over an encounter between Collins and the frum man who found the wallet.

Collins, wearing a Yankees cap in the clip, says that he is grateful and “appreciates the gesture so much.” He added, “I’m thankful to find out that there are people out there that care enough to give me back my wallet with all my things in it.”

“אבדת העובד כוכבים מותרת, שנא’ אבידת אחיך (דברים כב, ג). והמחזירה, הרי זה עובר עבירה, מפני שהוא מחזיק ידי עוברי עבירה. ואם החזירה לקדש את השם כדי שיפארו את ישראל וידעו שהם בעלי אמונה, הרי זה משובח. ובמקום שיש חילול השם, אבידתו אסורה וחייב להחזירה” ע”כ.

  2. To Anonymous Every yid should try to be קדש את השםn A few years ago a found a wallet. It had about 50 dollars his driver’s license and green card. I went to the address on the license which was on the outskirts of Boro Park and left my number in the mailbox. Someone called a day letter but only spoke Spanish, so I ran down the block to a grocery store and asked one of the workers to translate. The guy was shocked that I was going out of my way to return it. Kiddush Hashem #1. When I returned it and saw the guy’s smile I felt that this too was a kiddush Hashem. I told my wife then “perhaps if this non-jew sees a jew returned his wallet if he find’s something belonging to yid he would also return it.” Fast forward to only a few weeks ago. I was sitting in a doctor’s office when the receptionist tells me my wife is on the phone. I’m thinking why didn’t she call my cell. My wife tells me someone, Carlos, found my phone in the street. Before I left the doctor’s office I called the guy When we met I offered him a reward of $20.00 but he says, “No reward, I only want if someone finds my phone he should return it.” I just felt it was payback for what I did.

  3. I am not at all convinced that the result was a קידוש שם שמים.

Having the return of the wallet staged that way looks like a fake publicity stunt, and seemed to make the owner of the wallet uncomfortable.

Return the wallet לשם קידוש שם שמים without making a circus out of it. That would be a קידוש שם שמים off the highest order!!!
