kiryas-yoelKiryas Yoel is proposing a more than 12% school tax increase in order to offset transportation costs for busing more than 800 students to Yeshiva Shaarei Torah in Monroe.

NEWS12.com reports that the tax increase, if approved, would cost most families an additional $220 annually, according to District Superintendent Joel Petlin.

Petlin said originally the private busing costs were included in Shaarei Torah’s tuition, but that in order to keep costs down families were asked to apply for public transportation.

A vote on the increase is set for May 20 and the proposal will need a 60% approval from taxpayers in order to go forward.
