Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein issued a statement this evening, following the decision to advance the elections and dissolve the Knesset.

“As usual, I held consultations with all coalition heads and opposition factions, and asked in wake of the publication of the desire to dissolve the Knesset to determine the closest date possible for elections to the 21st Knesset,” Edelstein said.

He added that “the broad consensus emerging in the Knesset is April 9, 2019, 4 Nisan. This brings us to a situation where two weeks after the elections, the 21st Knesset won’t be able to convene because it will be in the middle of Pesach. The first sitting of this Knesset will take place on April 30.”

In conclusion, he sought to say something personal. “I’d like to say to the citizens of Israel: We’re leaving a Knesset that was characterized by verbal violence and offensive discourse. I’m full of hope and prayer that the election campaign in the State of Israel for the 21st Knesset will be characterized by a desire to present to the voters the things that really matter to the people, and not an attempt to attack the opponent.”
