At the initiative of Deputy Finance Minister Yitzchak Cohen of Shas, the Israel Electricity Company (IEC) is expected to soon provide kosher Shabbos electricity for over a hundred thousand families who use private electricity on Shabbos due to the p’sak of the Chazon Ish and other gedolim that Israeli electricity is forbidden on Shabbos due to the chillul Shabbos involved in its production.

IEC directors told Shas chairman Aryeh Deri that the private electricity supply used by such people often incorporates improperly installed cables and electricity boxes which in one instance led to the electrocution of two girls. Options to make Shabbos electricity possible include providing special generators for chareidi towns as Modi’in Illit does, or connecting buildings to privately run generators supervised by the company. Rav Chaim Kanievsky is very supportive of the new initiative.

My Rav said innovation is slow in the frum world, but not we are on a roller coaster. Which by the way—maybe ok. Shabatt Shalom for real.
