UTJ and Shas are searching for ways to supply electricity that does not involve chillul Shabbos. The State Comptroller recently issued a report complaining that private generators used by 50,000 religious families on Shabbos are not supervised by any official body.

MKs Moshe Gafni, Uri Maklev and Yaakov Asher met at the home of the rosh yeshiva of Slobodka, Rav Dov Landau, a talmid of the Chazon Ish, who opposed using regular electricity on Shabbos, and discussed a plan to establish centralized power generators in religious towns. These would be powered by natural gas piped in during the week and by more expensive compressed gas on Shabbos.

Towns embracing the plan include Bnei Brak, Beitar Illit, Beit Shemesh, Yerushalayim and Modi’in Illit.
